With today’s launch of Hulu’s original post-reality series If I Can Dream, we’re finally seeing social media and television being integrated in a meaningful way. It’s a move that will likely change the future of TV...yet again. Just like TiVo completely changed how and when we watch our favorite shows, Hulu took things to another level by changing where we watch our favorite shows. Now they’re really thinking outside the box by creating the very shows that will become our favorites.
Viewers will be able to interact with the If I Can Dream stars in real-time via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, blog, SMS or by commenting on the 24/7 live stream that will air on ificandream.com. Viewers will have the opportunity to watch every move live online as the five Hollywood hopefuls rehearse, write, socialize and plan their careers. And, if one of them should make it big, viewers can vote to choose their replacement. Hulu states: “Interactive audience participation makes If I Can Dream a fascinating cultural experiment, opening up the American Dream and democratizing the process of the making of a star.”
This move should come as no surprise – it’s all part of the growing trend toward the internet and away from traditional media.
