It happens every year. Your friends throw the classic holiday party, complete with ugly sweaters, Christmas tree cookies and a little too much eggnog. It’s not practical or affordable to bring a gift for everyone, so of course there’s going to be a white elephant swap.
White elephant is a game that requires all guests to bring one wrapped present to contribute to a gift exchange. These presents are often silly or humorous, as the term white elephant actually suggests an item you are trying to get rid of.
The game begins when the first person, drawn randomly, picks a present from the gift pile. Upon opening the gift, the second person in line gets to either take the gift the first person opened or pick a new one. As each person gets their turn, they can open a new, unknown gift or steal one from someone who has already opened his.
While this game is fun and gives everyone a chance to go home with a prize, it can be hard to pick out the top white elephant gifts. You want to bring the present everyone wants, but the game is also somewhat silly at its core. Do you get a serious gift everyone can use or something that may not be practical, but is hilarious and memorable?
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered either way. We scoured the web to find the top six best white elephant gifts to take to your holiday party in 2015.
- Adult Beverages
As long as everyone at the party is 21 years of age and up, booze is often an easy crowd-pleaser. Whether it’s a six-pack, bottle of wine or hard alcohol, adult beverages are often the go-to for a white elephant party. Depending on your spending limit, items like glasses, bottle and can openers, and other drinking accessories can be useful and inspire fun as well.
- Selfie Stick
Let’s face it, selfies aren’t going away any time soon. We never leave the house without our phones and there always seems to be a reason to snap a photo. Since the best selfies are those with multiple people, make that easier for one lucky guest with a selfie stick. Some of the nicer ones can be fairly expensive, but there are plenty of options available for under $30.
- Gift Cards
Although not the most exciting or unique gift you could bring to a white elephant exchange, you really can’t go wrong with gift cards. If you pick a place most people enjoy (think Starbucks, popular restaurants, Target), your gift will be fought over simply for its sheer usefulness.
- Dammit Doll
This one is very specific, but also pretty funny – and handy. You know those days at work when everything seems to be collapsing around you and all you want to do is bang your head on your desk? Instead of hurting your head, you can take your frustrations out on a Dammit Doll. According to the product’s poem, “Just grasp it firmly by the legs and find a place to slam it. And as you whack the stuffing out, yell ‘dammit,’’dammit’’dammit!’” It sounds sort of silly, but you will be grateful to have a safe way to get your aggression out the next time your team loses on a Hail Mary as the clock hits zero.
Who doesn’t love bacon? If you give the gift of bacon at your white elephant party, you are sure to be a hit. But you don’t just have to give the actual meat to spread the tasty cheer, as there are plenty of bacon-flavored products available (no refrigeration required). You could create your own little gift basket with toothpaste, floss, candy canes, coffee, air fresheners and lip balm – all with a bacon flavor or scent.
- Mugs and Cups
Reusability is a big deal nowadays, as people have become more environmentally conscious. While this is another one that may not be extremely memorable, it’s practical and responsible. Everyone can use an extra water tumbler or travel mug to minimize the use of paper products. Regular mugs for people to take to work are also an option, and there are many versions of these in funny shapes or with witty sayings that make them a little more unique.
Whether looking to stand out or just give the gift everyone will fight over, don’t just pick up a pizza on your way over (this has really happened). If you wouldn’t want to receive your gift, there’s a good chance your friends won’t either – and you could get stuck taking it back home with you after all of the good gifts are stolen.
