Understand project scope, audience, and goals, identify pain points and user characteristics.

Define multiple User Profiles for your audience, what are their goals, challenges and intended outcomes.

Define stories that describe each user's journey; generate swim lane charts for that journey. Create initial architecture to support the stories.

wireframes
Create low fidelity designs to flush out UI styles, key design elements and user specific interactions. These should be low time investment. Create first draft of design and style guides.

Work with your users to verify the journey and confirm that the goals and pain points have been addressed.
